Keep Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camelias
well watered during dry spells. This is done to make sure
they produce good flower buds for next year.
Rambler roses that have finished flowering
can have some of their long stems cut back. Pick stems that
have flowered leaving unflowered stems for next years blooms
Pick courgettes regularly. Leaving them
on the bush will turn the fruits into marrows.
Sow, lettuce, winter spinach and spring
cabbage directly into the veggie patch.
Runner beans will come into their own
this month. Pick every day to make sure you get the sweets
beans. If you have too many why not freeze a few for use later
in the year.
Keep dead heading your roses. This will
ensure that they continue to produce flowers right through
until the end of the summer. Don't feed roses anymore, if
you do you will end up with very soft foliage that may not
ripen before the onset of winter.
Trim, yew, leylandii and other evergreen
hedges this month. If you have a laurel hedge this is best
done using secateurs. Using hedge clippers on laurel will
cut the leaves in half and make the hedge look unsightly.
